In November 2016, the German government adopted the Climate Protection Plan 2050. The long‑term goal is to become mostly carbon neutral by then. The medium‑term goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Germany by at least 55 percent by 2030 compared with 1990 levels. As the situation stands at present, this can hardly be achieved. A major problem, for example, is the transport sector, which is currently responsible for about one fifth of Germany's greenhouse gas emissions.
